I am from New Jersey (last exit north on the Garden State Parkway). I went to college at Rutgers University , where I majored in computer science and English.

From there, I went to UIUC to join the Pablo Group under the direction of Daniel Reed, working on presentation of parallel system performance data with sound (sonification) before completing my  Ph. D. thesis  on Automatic Classification of Input/Output Access Patterns.  I continued my parallel input/output research as a postdoc with Garth Gibson at Carnegie Mellon University before coming to UCSC, where I am now.
