Michael Tanner is Fellow of the IEEE, a member of AAAS, and a Fellow of the California Council on Science and Technology. Starting in 1981, he was Chair of Computer and Information Sciences, Acting Dean of Natural Sciences, Academic Vice-Chancellor, and Executive Vice-Chancellor of UC Santa Cruz, returning to the faculty in 1998. Recognized as the founder of "codes on graphs," he was awarded the 50th anniversary "Golden Jubilee Award" by the Information Society of the I.E.E.E. for his 1981 paper, "A Recursive Approach to Low-Complexity Codes."

His research interests include: Information theory, error-control codes, iterative algorithms on graphs, complexity, VLSI systems, and fault-tolerance. Further information can be found in his abbreviated biography (pdf) and below.
