Some guidelines for the presentations:

  • We have a full schedule; all talks must finish in <= 10 minutes. I will stop you at 10 minutes.
  • A good rule of thumb is 1-2 minutes per slide. Aim for 5-6 slides.
  • Practice your talk ahead of time so that you know you can get through it in the time alotted.
  • Most people talk fast when they are nervous, and it is normal to be nervous when talking in front of a group. It is best to bring a little extra material and be prepared to cover it or skip it, as time permits. A 2-minute talk is almost as problematic as a 20-minute talk.
  • Bullet items on slides are not sentences: include only as many words as are necessary to communicate the ideas. Busy slides are distracting, not helpful. If you need nodes to remember what you want to say, bring notes--they don't belong on your slides.
  • Your audience knows less about your subject than you do, so a good introduction to and motivation of the problem you are addressing are essential before you begin discussing your solution.
  • Sample outline:
    • Title slide
    • Background/Motivation/Problem Statement
    • Solution
    • Design/Experimental Methodology
    • Results
    • Conclusion
You don't have to follow this outline exactly, and I expect more descriptive slide titles, but the basic idea should be clear.
