CMP 160 -- Final Project Guidelines

Important Dates:

• October 28, 1996 -- Preliminary project proposal due.
• November 20, 1996 -- Final project proposal due.
• December 11, 1996 -- Project demo and writeup.

Project Proposal:

The purpose of the project proposal is to make sure your final project is something that can be completed in about 2 weeks. The review of your proposal is an iterative process -- the earlier you get your proposal approved, the earlier you can start working on your project!

Submit three possible projects that you would like to do. Rank them in the order of your preference. Provide as much detail as you can for each one. You can submit the list to me by email or paper.

Final projects are individual projects. In addition, I also prefer that students work on different topics. So, that's another incentive for getting those proposals in early -- you get a lock on the topic as soon as your proposal is approved.

Project Requirements:

• Working program demo.
• Maximum of 5 page writeup which contain:
  • brief description of your project,
  • description of data structure and algorithm used,
  • and a mini user's guide.
• Submit source code, and new data sets, using submit-cmp160.
• We'll take a video of your demo -- allow your window to be resized.
• We'll also take some snapshots. Provide:
  • two favorite screen grabs, and
  • a pause button if you're doing an animation.

Possible Topics:

Here's a sundry list of possible topics. Instead of some images from previous projects, please check /classes/cmp160/demo to try out some of them -- take note of user interface and user guide.

• 3D text banner.
• Terrain viewer / flight simulator.
• Seashells, trees, waves, slugs, pets.
• VRML worlds.
• Kaleidoscope, swirling things.
• 2D, 3D morphing.
• Deformations.
• Texture mapping / synthesis.
• Extrusion objects / surface of revolutions.
• Special effects -- spheres, fireworks, water, ...
• Hierarchical animation.
• ...
