SUNYA completes its first bike/ped course

The State University of New York at Albany (SUNYA) has just completed the first semester of a new course entitled "Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Planning." The course is offered in the School of Geography and Planning, and is taught by Jeff Olson, who is the State Bicycle and Pedestrian Program manager at NYSDOT.

More than 20 graduate and undergraduates took the course this semester, doubling the original expectations for enrollment. Students learned the 'state of the art' skills needed to become intermodal transportation professionals, produced research papers on successul bike/ped programs and participated in an in-class design charrette which developed a Bike/Ped Master Plan for a typical communtiy.

This is currently the only full-time graduate level course of its kind in the U.S., and will hopefully serve as a model for other similar programs.
