Working World:
Out of the gate from UCSC, I've been hired by Sony Computer Entertainment America
as a network engineer for 3rd party developer support. In this role, I'll be
supporting the thousands of Playstation 2, Playstation Portable, and
Playstation 3 developers who are creating networked or online titles. This
includes the testing and development of new network protocols for games
supporting ten's of thousands of online users simultaneously,
handheld-to-handheld portable gaming via adhoc networks,
handheld-to-basestation gaming on the Internet, and yet undefined gaming
utilizing a massive grid computing infrastructure on PS3.
Academics:
I have completed a M.S. in Computer Engineering with a research focus in
wireless networks. I also did my undergraduate work here at UCSC in Computer
Engineering. I graduated with my B.S. with Honors in June of 2003. However, I
started my graduate work early and by Summer 2004 had completed all classwork
and research for my M.S. followed by the long thesis writing process, with
total completion in December 2004. My advisor is Professor
JJ Garcia-Luna-Aceves.
I also have Associates degrees in Mathematics and Liberal Arts from The College of Marin, Kentfield
California, 2001. I am also an alumnus of the Haas School of Business at UC
Berkeley's BASE program.
Research:
During my time as a senior undergrad and a Masters student, I worked for the Computer
Communications Research Group (CCRG) doing research in wireless
networks.
Projects:
- Thesis project: Analysis of Packet Flows in Simulated Ad
Hoc Networks Using Standard Network Tools. (download
PDF) Advisor: JJ
Garcia-Luna.
- The ConferenceXP collaboration system, sponsored by Microsoft Research under Patrick Mantey
- Implementation of the Labeled Distance Routing Protocol (LDR) with Marc Mosko under JJ Garcia-Luna.
- Analysis of simulated networks using standard Internet tools under JJ Garcia-Luna and Katia Obraczka
- A study of CPU load due to high bandwidth network processing and the
merits of TCP Offload Engines (TOE's), for Computer
Architecture under Richard Hughey
- A study of system scheduling impact due to interruption by high bandwidth
peripherals, for Advanced Computer Operating Systems under Scott Brandt
- Analyzing models for network protocol development with methodologies from
Software Engineering in mind, under Guy M. Cox
Note: I have written papers on these topics, however they have not yet been
published. If you are interested in looking at these papers or discussing these
topics, please contact me directly.

Industry work:
Prior to my job at Sony Computer Entertainment and my research position, I
worked in the tech industry.
I have been actively servicing clients of my consulting firm, Binary One
Computer Systems, since 1997. Services have included everything from PC repair
and construction for individuals, to network planning and implementation for small and medium businesses, and even to enterprise Linux training.
I have been active in the Open Source Community and involved with Linux for
roughly the same period of time. During these explosive years of Linux growth,
I have been involved with many community projects, as well as corporate backed
projects from companies like VA Linux and LinuxCare. I have contibuted code,
documentation, and project guidance to these important, sometimes mission
critical projects.
For the future, I am interested in the area of product
R&D and project management. Such a role might come in the form of engineering
work, or it might come in management, or even as a financial analyst of new
technologies in this area.

Personal stuff:
I am a native Californian spending my early years in Southern California and
the rest here in the Bay Area. Besides networks, I am into cars (classic,
exotic, import, etc), snowboarding, waverunning, hiking, and very much into
amateur photography. I have a Cannon Powershot G5 digital
camera, a Sony
Cybershot 2.1 digital camera, and an old Pentax SLR film camera. Feel free to
visit my gallery at http://jonwebb.org/gallery/. One day
I'll get a nice concise portfolio posted. Until then, enjoy.
