Official Class Syllabus



A look at network protocols and devices with an eye towards how they are designed and how they function, what security problems have been discovered in the past, what problems may still be lurking, and the design of secure systems. The goal of the course to to prepare students to conduct research into network security issues. The course will focus on papers selected from papers published in academic proceedings, security related announcements, and IETF drafts. Additionally, there will be several (non-required) textbooks recommended for background material. In this seminar class, grading will be based on class participation, presentation of some selected work, and a project in the area.

Overview of network protocols and devices

Overview of cryptography

Security threats in networks

Secure protocols

Known problems in TCP/IP

IPSEC

Authentication protocols

Formal methods for analyzing protocols

Key management and use

Anonymity/anti-anonymity(tracking)

Firewalls

Intrusion detection
