CE Faculty Department Meeting Minutes November 4, 2002 11:00-12:30, Room BE330 Attending: C. Bazeghi, P. Chan, G. Cox, L. de Alfaro, J. Ferguson, R. Hughey, G. Langdon, T. Larrabee, K. Karplus, T. Madhyastha, R. Manduchi, P. Mantey, K. Obraczka, M. Schlag, A. Varma [...] Discussion Items: 1. CE80E. Guy Cox created, & will be teaching, CMPE80E spring quarter. This course was developed as a result of the undergrad ABET CEFUL last year. Guy distributed the supplemental sheet & there was discussion re: the course. ABET does not require that CE offer this course but it would help our curriculum & could draw students into CE. It is likely that it will be of interest to under represented students. Enrollment would be about 30-40 students. Case studies will be used & students will write papers. Possibly in the future it could be a W course. It was decided that the title should be Engineering Ethics in order to attract a wide audience and that it be a required course as part of a group (action item: undergrad committee will create a list of those courses). Faculty are encouraged to contact Guy re: any issues to include in the course. [...] 4. ABET. CE is falling behind, & EE is far behind in the ABET process. Three CE faculty owe Tracy assessments. Action Item: faculty should submit them to Tracy today. If Tracy receives assessments from two different people, she has to get them to reach consensus. Faculty should consider how courses relate to each other, whether outcomes are being met, feedback & checking feedback loops, suggesting others if applicable. Outcome A Martine Outcome B JJ Outcome C Pak. Changed to Joel after meeting. Outcome D Anujan & Tara, Kevin, Cyrus, Richard, Steve Outcome E Alexandre Outcome F Richard Outcome G Joel. Changed to Tara after meeting. Outcome H Roberto Outcome I Kevin Outcome J Tracy. Changed to Roberto after meeting. Outcome K Pat Mantey Outcome L Katia Outcome M Luca Outcome N Hai Design: Richard, Anujan, Martine, Pak, Cyrus Professional Component A: Kevin Professional Component B: Cyrus Professional Component C: Tracy. Changed to Roberto after meeting. Consider whether grad survey helps us with feedback mechanism. CE should want to present our strengths as well as our weaknesses, and how we are working to improve. It hurts the entire SoE if EE isn't handling its part of ABET. Tracy has received more help from Chemistry & Physics than from EE. It's as damaging to CE as it is to EE if EE fails. There was discussion re: whether Tracy should do EE's part rather than trying to get EE to do it. It is possible that the accreditation team would flunk EE because it would know that EE didn't do it. It is probable that Tracy will ask faculty to tell her their lab needs for those courses that have labs. The alumni survey is for students who graduate several years ago. The grad survey will be re-named Exit Survey. It is suggested that faculty look at the entire ABET website. There was the suggestion that after the CLP is finalized each year, extended course descriptions could be distributed to faculty teaching those courses. 5. ABET Discussion groups. Capstone courses: change syllabi to include the theory of working in groups & teaching group skills (change extended descriptions). In addition, restructure CMPE123 to be more like EE125 & 126 (2 quarters).
