Bioinformatics (M.S., Ph.D.)

Bioinformatics is similar to the classical engineering disciplines in several ways: it is the application of mathematics (e.g., probability and statistics), science (e.g., biochemistry), and a core set of problem solving methods (e.g., computer use and programming) to design and implement solutions to critical problems. Over the last several years, the prominence of both the bioinformatics field and our bioinformatics research has dramatically grown. We regularly work with biology and chemistry undergraduates to plan minors and double-majors as training for this exciting field. The bioinformatics research group generally employs 5-10 CMPE and CMPS undergraduates, many of whom continue on in this field. Students entering our graduate program frequently have gaps in their education in areas with which they have no experience. The depth of the required mathematics, computer, and science demands that this foundation knowledge be spread over several years. Without an undergraduate major in bioinformatics, this can be quite difficult.

Computer Engineering (M.S., Ph.D.)

Engineering is a profession that emphasizes analysis and design, applying the knowledge of mathematics, science, and technology to the benefit of humanity. A good engineering education has three parts: a sound foundation in mathematics and science, substantial design experience to develop skills and engineering aesthetics, and a broad education in the humanities and social sciences to learn how and where to apply the skills developed.

Computer Science (M.S., Ph.D.)

Computer science is the study of the theoretical and practical aspects of computer technology and computer usage. The department offers courses on a wide range of topics, many of which include a mathematical component. UC Santa Cruz offers both the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees, as well as the master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees, in computer science. Besides offering instructional courses, the Computer Science Department engages in a substantial research program in which both advanced undergraduates and graduate students participate.

Electrical Engineering (M.S., Ph.D.)

Engineering is a profession that emphasizes analysis and design, and electrical engineers apply their knowledge to an expanding array of technical, scientific, and mathematical questions. A good engineering education has three parts: a sound foundation in mathematics and science, substantial design experience to develop skills and engineering aesthetics, and a focus in the humanities and social sciences to learn how and where to apply the skills developed. Electrical engineering is a very broad discipline, and many academic programs in electrical engineering encompass a wide range of topics. The electrical engineering program at UCSC is meant to complement existing campus programs, emphasizing three general areas: analog electronics, communications (including signal and image processing), and control and dynamical systems.

Network Engineering (M.S.)

The continued success and viability of Santa Clara Valley's companies and its overall economy depends on a technical work force that has a strong foundation in engineering sciences and is up to date on emerging technologies. Higher education plays a major role in filling these critical needs by providing specialized programs and advanced degrees. The UCSC Master's Degree Program with an emphasis in network engineering was created for this purpose.

Statistics & Stochastic Modeling (M.S., Ph.D.)

The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at UCSC offers both a master's program and a doctoral program in Statistics and Stochastic Modeling (SSM). The goal of these programs is to help students develop into independent scholars who are prepared for productive careers in research, teaching, and industry. SSM students use mathematical methods and reasoning to solve real-world problems of a scientific or decision-making nature in a wide variety of subjects, in engineering, medicine, the physical and biological sciences, and the social sciences.
