Firstly, this double CD has no cohesive link, other than the fact that it sounds like a pair of solo albums stitched together to demo exactly how Andres yin works to augment Big Bois yang. Andre 3000s Love Below disc rates as the more eclectic of the two, given that hes turned in his emcee credentials to become a full-on funk-soul-jazz vocalist who mostly sings about items of love ("Happy Valentine's Day"), carnal lust ("Spread"), and female adoration ("Prototype"). Minus the big band schmaltz of "Love Hater" and cheesy cover jobs ("My Favorite Things"), Andres disc is sick (meaning great). As is to be expected, the Big Boi disc is less arty, more gangsta and worldly, and features the less-progressive guest raps of ATL crunk purveyors Lil Jon and The Eastside Boyz ("Last Call") and Jay-Z who rhymes the hook on "Flip Flop Rock". Unlike Big Boi, Andre keeps his collabos to a minimum, once crooning alongside Norah Jones on the cool yet sappy "Take Off Your Cool", and once with Kelis. Boi fulfills his Dungeon Family duty with flying colors by flipping some dirty southern up-tempo raps over electro beats on "GhettoMusick". Just when you thought another artist or group from Atlanta would drop a "Crunk" album, you thought wrong. There is maybe one crunk song on the Speakerboxx album, but the rest are unique. It is still hip-hop and rap, but there is a mixture of jazz and some pop. All the songs on both discs are awesome and I enjoy all of them. The only problem with the album is the transition from romantic music to some good rap on Big Boi's Speakerboxx. All in all, this CD is good and open to anyone who likes music. It can be rock or jazz, you will still definitely love this album!!!All of the guest apperances on Speakerboxx: Sleepy Brown, Killer Mike, Jay-Z, Konkrete, Ludacris, Big Gipp, Cee-lo, Khujo Goodie, Lil'Jon & The Eastside Boyz, Mello, Slimm Calhoun, Jazze Pha, and background vocals by Debra Killings. 5

Sacred it's not, loving neither, but it sure is flat...

Sting victimises himself with his own formula and it's not even the first time. This is a songwriter with a truly grand potential as he's proven in the past with brilliant albums like "Ten Summoner's Tales" or "Nothing Like the Sun". But almost systematically lately he's been releasing one after the other boring albums that fail to capture the listener, let alone reach the caliber of previous outings. For fans who hoped that "Brand new day" (for example) was just a "bad moment" his new LP "Sacred love" will only do for renewed dissapointment. That's all it was for me. This is really nothing that will go down as even close to memorable but rather a forgettable record with flat songs, lazy vocals and (uncharacteristically for Sting) empty lyrics. The music in particular sounds maybe apt for car or detergent commercials but hardly anything more ambitional than that. There's not one single song here that grabs you, not one that makes your head turn or demands your attention. I work in a record store and as i heard it being played by a colleague the other day i thought this must be some "B-sides" release or someone with a stunningly similar voice to Sting but lacking the talent. Nope, it was Sting himself. It might be (as can be the case with any artist) that the inspiration tank has run empty. It might also be (as is again often the case) that this is just a "professional fulfilment" (contracts etc) but, whichever the case, this is really a very mediocre album. Sting keeps selling albums based on the momentum of former brilliance but he's also losing fans in hordes, especially the older ones who've heard him in way better times than his current ones. I'm starting to feel certain that those better times are not likely to return.... 1

Best Soundtrack EVER

What an absolutely breathtaking soundtrack for an absolutely wondrerful movie. There is not a single track you will want to skip! How ironic it is, that I would have to rate the songs on the CD almost in the order they appear on the soundtrack (with the exception of moving Dido's song down a couple of notches along with the Norah Jones song)The Kelly Clarkson Song, Maroon5 song, and Wyclef Jean songs are all outstanding tracks on a totally awesome album. The Trouble With Love Is will have you wistfully remembering your many favorite scenes from the movie as well as touching your heart. You'll find yourself unable to not sing along. Sweetest Goodbye/Sunday morning shows a totally other side of Maroon5 then what you are familiar with on radio. It will have you moving in your seat and again, singing along.Take me as I am is just a totally fun raggae type song that just fits the movie so well. Wow, a great soundtrack to an even greater movie! What could be better? I bought this CD minutes after I saw the movie and I love it! The music in the movie is so different. Don't be fooled- the tracks ARE here!

I was reading several reviews of people concerned that some tracks (ex. "Love is all around" and "All I want for Christmas") were not on the soundtrack. They are. Amazon just lists 14 tracks out of 17 included in the CD and these are precisely the tracks missing from Amazon's list. So don't be fooled- they're all here. The soundtrack is great and very very enjoyable- you can actually find yourself remembering the exact scenes and laughing out loud. Nevertheless, it does lack some of the feel of the movie sometimes,and it probably doesn't make much sense to buy it unless you see the movie first (which by the way is outstanding). This album features some of the stranger tracks ever done by Missy Elliott ("Signs," or the "I was in love with [cough] Jay-Z [cough] a Sagittarius, and he was also an Aries, Taurus, Pisces, and everything between the previous two signs" song) and Jay-Z (the horrible "Crazy in Love" and "That's How You Like It"--thank God for The Black Album) The best tracks to me are "Be with You" through "Yes" and "Speechless." The upbeat beginning is too bombastic and sounds like a failed version of any experimental album ever created from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band to Speakerboxx/The Love Below. The latter songs are sappy ballads. Thematically, it's Survivor all over again, without "I-think-I-can-sing" Michelle and Kelly (who can do better than Simply Deep). 2

SuperSean reviews... Beyonce's "Dangerously In Love"I always review albums months after purchasing them so I can give an unbiased opinion. I hope this one will help.Before I say anything, the problem with this album (or least the problem with approaching this album) is people, right off the bat, think "Beyonce... oh! Destiny's Child!" I couldn't possibly think of a worse way to go about listening to this album. Don't think of it as Destiny's Child, but think of it as Beyonce. This is her first solo effort so that could mean anything. Her first single "Crazy In Love" is a trick to make you think most of the album is upbeat and dancable. It worked for me! I have said it before, and I'll say it again - I am a pop-music man, and not ashamed of it. Beyonce's "Dangerously In Love" is not a pop album, (although it does hint at the genre a couple of times) it is an R&B album. Expect upbeat tracks with rap artists making non-sensical noises in the background. Expect potentially good songs towards the beginning, but after a minute and a half, with there being no change in the baseline, percussion or deadened harmonies, the songs quickly losing their appeal. Songs like Baby Boy and Naughty Girl are probably the best songs on the album (and that is probably why those are the first songs on the album.) Songs like Yes, Hip Hop Star and Signs are somewhat catchy, but lacking the zest of the latter tracks. Her remake of Dangerously In Love sounds no different from the original version recorded on the Destiny's Child "Survivor" album and songs such as Speechless, The Close I Get To You and Gift From Virgo and great songs to help you fall asleep during those insomniac hours. Overall, I love Beyonce, she's a great dancer, a great singer and usually a great writer... but with this album, she wasn't all that great. 5

Get the best out of LOVE IS HELL....

I'm sorry to admit, but I only discovered Ryan Adams through his album GOLD. I bought GOLD based on the strength of his single, "New York, New York". I was pleasently surprised with the album. What really blew me away was the power of Mr. Adam's slower songs (i.e. "When The Stars Go Blue"). I readily anticapated his follow up album, LOVE IS HELL. Unfortunately, his label was not so enthusiastic. They deemed LOVE IS HELL as too dark...a.k.a. not commercial enough. Oh well. They talked Ryan Adams into recording a more upbeat rock n' roll album, ROCK N' ROLL. Don't take this wrong, but I'm glad they did. Not only do we get the great album, ROCK N' ROLL, but we still got the absolutely gorgeous masterpiece, LOVE IS HELL. Yes, it is unfortunate that they broke this album into two seperate EP's, but we still got two GREAT albums from Ryan Adams. Hooray for the fans! Don't look a gifthorse in the mouth. I've read many reviews criticizing ROCK N' ROLL, but it is a wonderful album and a great companion piece to LOVE IS HELL. Stop complaining and be thankful. Yes, I agree that LOVE IS HELL is by far the superior of the two albums, but for God's sake, ROCK N' ROLL is nothing to complain about. For anybody who is a fan of Ryan Adams, don't cheat yourself and buy both! The perfection continues...

If the rumors are true, Ryan Adams had to release Love is Hell part 1 and 2 as EP's because his label thought they were basically not mainstream enough (whatever that means), so he created Rock N Roll. If that's true, I honestly feel like I won the Ryan Adams lottery. Short of being able to read the phone book and still make it interesting, I have yet to find any of his work without merit (Demolition being my favorite). Rock N Roll is certainly different, but it's an amazing piece of work and the best rock album of 2003. Taking a major step back to his more intimate, moody work (although by going backwards doesn't mean it's bad), the Love is Hell ep's are truly stunning work. Ryan has always shown his best side when it comes to mellow, introspective work (the best track on Rock N Roll is not a barn burner but rather the somber title track). Love is Hell pt. 2 continues where pt. 1 left off, and each track is simply perfect. I highly recommend you pick this up along with pt. 1 - you won't be disappointed.This is a rare artist where you can enjoy the music without actually listening to the lyrics - just soak in the melodies, the near-orchestral chord changes and enjoy the moment. Or, have some coffee and listen hard to the message of each track. Either way, you won't be disappointed.Without going nuts over this guy, I will say that Ryan Adams is the most important musician working today. Some critics would disagree, but that's because they have their heads too far up the as* of the White Stripes and OutKast at the moment. Nonetheless, time will no doubt prove my point. Ryan Adams is to the 21st century what Elton John and Bernie Taupin were to the 70's (except he's only one person so he gets even more credit for pulling it off). A wonderful treat

It's a shame that this and Love is Hell Part One were released as afterthoughts by Lost Highway as they show a natural progression from Gold. What's more is that these EPs (and I think Love is Hell Pt2 in particular) show Adams maturing as a song writer. From the base of his talent evident in Gold, Adams is able to weave songs that hold their own and mesh well as an album. English Girls Approx. is one of the best songs I've heard in years. Unlike Rock N Roll, Adams doesn't wear his influences on his sleeves with this work, instead he branches out in his own direction creating some of the best music of the past five years. Firstly, this double CD has no cohesive link, other than the fact that it sounds like a pair of solo albums stitched together to demo exactly how Andres yin works to augment Big Bois yang. Andre 3000s Love Below disc rates as the more eclectic of the two, given that hes turned in his emcee credentials to become a full-on funk-soul-jazz vocalist who mostly sings about items of love ("Happy Valentine's Day"), carnal lust ("Spread"), and female adoration ("Prototype"). Minus the big band schmaltz of "Love Hater" and cheesy cover jobs ("My Favorite Things"), Andres disc is sick (meaning great). As is to be expected, the Big Boi disc is less arty, more gangsta and worldly, and features the less-progressive guest raps of ATL crunk purveyors Lil Jon and The Eastside Boyz ("Last Call") and Jay-Z who rhymes the hook on "Flip Flop Rock". This is a great album, but don't expect all rap. Big Boi's CD is rap and Andre's CD is mostly singing but Andre's CD is the standout disk, it's a whole new sound, it's now what you usually hear on the radio, it's incredible. Big Boi's CD is traditional rap, but good traditional rap if you know what I mean. 1

"Love is Hell", but this CD is not

Those of you who love the alt-country version of Ryan Adams will be disappointed to some extent but this album seems to harken somewhat back to "Heartbreaker." It is distinctly British with the jangly guitars and understated melodies. The ep is also dark in its scope and starkly different from Gold in almost every way. "This House is Not for Sale" is the best track on this disc while "Political Scientist" seems to be the most unneccessary. "Shadowlands" channels "Sylvia Plath" and the cover of "Wonderwall" is very good. What is the most striking though about this album is that it is so much stronger lyrically than Rock n' Roll. The melodies are more descernable and hooks abound in the least likely places. It's surprising that Lost Highway would want to keep this album off the shelves and instead force Ryan to make another completely different record. "Love is Hell" has a greater sense of cohesiveness that was absent to a great extent on "Gold" or even on "Demolition." The influence of the Smiths and Joy Division is quite apparent. Adams seems to take on this genre well. The truest test though will be to listen to "Love is Hell pt. 2" and decide just how good an album these two EP's would have made. Until then, pick this up and skip out on Rock n' Roll if you want more than fluff. 5

Another masterpiece rejected by a record label!

First of all...let me say that I am already counting the days until 'Love Is Hell Pt. 2' is released. This album is pure Ryan Adams at his very best. The album begins with 'Political Scientist' which very much reminds me of an early Radiohead song. After 'Afraid Not Scared', is my favorite song on the album, 'This House Is Not For Sale.' This song literally brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. I may be wrong but the words seem to speak of a relationship that has ended (either through divorce or death). It seems to be about one of the people thinking back on the memories of the house together and not believing that it is all over now. Great song which reminds me a lot of a Springsteen song.After the title track, the last four songs on the album are all amazing. From the cover of 'Wonderwall' to 'Avalanche'...You can sense the emotion in Ryan's voice.The bottom line on this album is this...It is too bad that the only thing record labels want anymore is 'radio-friendly' songs...even if they are not all that great. I enjoy listening to 'Rock N Roll' but it clearly is not Ryan Adams at his best. However, 'Love Is Hell Pt. 1' is Ryan at his best. Thank goodness for people like Ryan Adams and Wilco who see beyond the record label's fodder and still release what they know to be great albums! 5

This, not "Rock 'n' Roll", is the true follow up to "Gold"

How Lost Highway could have rejected this fantastic piece of music (and the just-about-as-strong "Part II") and instead embraced "Rock 'n' Roll" will never cease to amaze me. One listen and you will understand what I mean. What happened to indie labels backing their artists (I know, wishful thinking)? John Porter gives a quiet and sensitive production to Adams' self-confessed "bummer king" songs, and who cares if the songs are depressing? In my view, this is where Adams excels. Though "Rock 'n' Roll" has its moments, wait to get that one until after you've listened to the true follow up to "Gold", then view "Rock 'n' Roll" as the anomaly it truly is. With a little help from his friend...

There simply is no such thing as a bad album from Steve Tyrell who has brought back so many of the songs I loved while growing up. He has a universal appeal to all ages -- maybe sex appeal, maybe happiness showing through, which is, in and of itself, very appealing. The music is magnificent and personal, as if he is singing it to you. Alas, I hope it won't change since just about the time the CD was released, his Stephanie lost her several-year battle with cancer and died in his arms. She was truly his partner, inspiration, and helped get him from producing records to singing, both of which he has done flawlessly. I have all of his CDs and hope he continues to make them but, more than that, hope he knows that so many of us will treasure what we have, until he is ready to make more music. I would recommend that anyone get this album -- it's beautiful, wonderful, and truly a tribute to love. 5

HE TOUCHES THE HEART

For those who follow these reviews, I haven't written one in over a year. On November 3, 2002, I got very 'personal' in my last review, talking about the inspiration and hope I felt when listening to Liza Minnelli's valiant comeback attempt in her "Liza's Back" CD. I didn't get too specific, but the fact is, we had just learned that my wife, Sande, was suffering from cancer. My beloved Sande died in February of 2003, and just as I was ordering Steve Tyrell's latest CD, "This Guy's In Love," I was notified that his own beloved Stephanie had died of cancer on October 27th of this year. Knowing this, it is almost impossible to listen to this latest collection of wonderful Tyrell songs without, once again, 'getting personal.' I'm not naive enough to think he ran out and recorded every number the same day he got his own bad news, but still.....I can all too easily imagine the depth of his suffering and pain when I hear the melancholy treatment he lends to such classics as "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To," "The Nearness of You," "I've Got A Crush On You," and "They Can't Take That Away From Me." Especially touching for me was hearing "A Love Like Ours" (dedicated in the liner notes "for Steph") and "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" (which is actually about a broken romance, but I think Mr. Tyrell and I understand the deeper, more tragic undertones of the lyrics.) However, the last thing I intend to do here is imply that only the lonely (or heart-broken) can enjoy the vast talent of Steve Tyrell. I, personally, have been a major admirer of his since he first started recording, which you will know if you ever happen to see my 'Listmania' compilation titled "THE BEST MEN (Musically Speaking)." I place him in pretty good company on that list! He has a rare gift of coveying emotion, be it happy or sad, and he is quickly becoming a legend. And without sounding more morose than I already have, I have updated my own future (and I'm hoping for the very DISTANT future!) funeral arrangements to include only two recordings....both his from earlier releases...."For All We Know (We May Never Meet Again)" and "I'll Be Seeing You." So, OK, this may all seem a little depressing, but it's not. A voice like Steve Tyrell's....his magical ability to touch the heart (and soul)of everyone who has the privelege of hearing him sing....is something to celebrate, shout about from the rooftops, and ENJOY. Enjoy the genius of Steve Tyrell on his latest CD, and let's hope for many, many more....for many years to come. 5

I'm so turned on by his voice

"A respectable, but not outstanding, album."

Looking more like Traci Lords than a jazz singer, Diana Krall isn't what you'd expect when you think of blues vocalists. But her extremely effortless and efficient voice comes through quite well in her latest CD, even though her piano skills are unused. Krall compliments the already-faultless London Symphony Orchestra in creating a number of well-crafted tracks that relaxes and electrifies the listener at the same time. Following up her tremendously popular tribute to the Nat King Cole trio in All For You, and then her Grammy-winning When I Look In Your Eyes was never going to be easy, but she seems to have succeeded in putting together some wholly pleasurable and fully tranquil tracks that harkens the memory back to the songs of 'Ol' Blue Eyes' - Frank Sinatra. "I Remember You" in particular sounds like it was written by Frankie himself for Krall, combining an excellent guitar beat with an unexpectedly adequately-performed piano tune. It's followed by "Cry Me a River", which, to us at least, sounds straight out of a blues joint in the 50's - entirely depressing yet entirely enjoyable at the same time. However, the lack of her piano dexterity on the album destroys what could've have been some superb songs. Both the opening track "S'Wonderful" and "I Get Along Without You Very Well" sound too orchestral for our tastes, using a plentiful number of flutes, violins and other instruments, while "Besame Mucho", the now-formulaic 'Spanish' track on every jazz CD, seems to forced onto the listener with Krall sounding like a foreigner trying to speak the language. Despite those minor failings, The Look of Love is a compelling yet flawed album that's a respectable, but not outstanding, album. 5

A Delightful Slice of Kralliana

What can we say about Diana Krall that hasn't been said? She's beautiful and talented and has a way with a song. "The Look of Love" only further adds to the opinion that she is one of the more accomplished artists of our time. Her new CD shows her growth as an artist by venturing where she has not gone before.Rather than stick with studio musicians, Diana enlists the help of the London Symphony Orchestra. Her voice blends pertectly with the muscianship and gives this CD a classical feel. Diana shows her ability to handle all kinds of music, from the Latin-tinged "Besame Mucho" (remember when the Beatles did this one?), to the more traditonal "S'Wonderful.". Other symphony-influenced pieces are are "The Night We Called It a Day", "Cry Me a River" and "Dancing in the Dark".Diana has always been a big fan of the great composers and she offers us the work of a wide variety. Bachrach and David's title track, Hoagy Carmichael's "I Get Along Very Well Without You", Johnny Mercer's "I Remember You" are all standouts.Diana's voice has also remarkably improved (not that it was bad before!.) It's much softer and smoother, which fits in beautifully with the tone of this CD."The Look of Love" is a must buy for Krallaniacs everywhere. It would be great if she will include in her repertoire such lovely songs as "Taking A Chance On Love", "How Long Has This Been Going On", "La Vie En Rose, "The More I See You", "Night And Day", "Just In Time", "My Romance", "Lullaby of Birdland", "Till The End Of Time" (based on Chopin's Polonaise No. 6), and "Full Moon And Empty Arms"(based on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2), to suggest a few. Musical Reverence and Spiritual Impression

It's always helpful to hear a good sermon, and pray together, but the importance of music to our Christian expression cannot be understated, and would be unlikely to inspire loyalty and commitment to the respect and dignity of religious guidance without the contribution of spiritual impressions that are a part of religious rituals. It also helps to provide many an example of the choices that we each have to help make the lives of other people better with the skills and talents that are ultimately, God given, and are a recognition of that fact. Perhaps that's why spiritual music is so satisfying as it is presented as the pure glory of God made real and visible. 5
