Lab 1

Lab Policies

1. You must attend the lab section that you have signed up for.
2. All labs, unless otherwise indicated by the lab exercise, are due at the end of your lab period.
3. You may at most have 1 excused, late lab only if you have permission from your lab tutor to submit your lab late. You must obtain permission at least 24 hours in advance. The late lab may at the latest be submitted 1 week late.
4. Check the syllabus and newsgroup daily. The url for both is

Lab 1 Topics/Exercises

1. Review the hardware components of a computer.
2. Review the concepts of operating systems, Dos, Windows.
3. List the directory contents of your current directory using dir. Try the dir /w and dir /w | more commands to see how they help to list the directory contents.
4. Note the contents of the directory: files, subdirectories, etc.
5. Bring up windows. Review the window structure.
6. Look at the contents of the directory using windows.
7. Change the directory using windows.
8. Log into your CATS account.
9. Check your email using pine.
10. Send your tutor an email.
11. Quit pine, log out of your CATS account.
12. Click on the Netscape icon.
13. Open the course syllabus url.
14. Follow links to find the dated syllabus, access the newsgroup.
